On December 4, 2009 at about 2 P.M. she was kidnapped. However, she was fortunate enough to be rescued after some hours. A case was registered in Amtali Police Station and three accused persons out of four were arrested by the police at the persuasion of the Tripura Commission for Women (TCW). But she was under utter trauma and there were chances the the tormentor may not stop. At that time Surbhanu’s mother and a relative took her to TCW. TCW wrote to the State Government and arranged shelter for Surbhanu in Bhagini Nivedita Girls Hostel from where she appeared Madhyamik Examination under the special care and security provided by the Commission.
The Commission has to pay Rs.840/- per month for her fooding although the State Government has provided her a seat free of cost in the said Hostel at the request of the Commission. It had been pretty hard for TWC to meet the expenditure on food & tuition.
It is in this backdrop that TTF learned about this case and came forward to help. Mr. Saumen Sarkar of TTF is now assisting her with a monthly stipend of INR 1500 to cover her expenses. This is the Mother Theresa Scholarship of Rs 18000/- per year as announced by TTF beginning of 2010. TTF started making the payment with effect from May 2010.
